Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in Sacramento just yet. Mother Nature has provided us with a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s in full control. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a repairman out out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall may bury your air conditioner in the snow, diminishing its performance when the temperatures start to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can inhibit a high-efficiency system from operating as such. The situation could become an even greater problem too if you don’t prep for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate as it should even though snow has fallen or could fall in the upcoming days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Inspect the area routinely to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that could have built up during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, placing a cover over your air conditioner might end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner can be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Sacramento will more than likely fluctuate up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can change the performance of your air conditioner. At American HVAC Inc in Sacramento, we are always available to take a look at any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or adding a new system.
